Once again, we take you to the far corners of the Earth, to present
the latest in cichlids. Ad Konings takes us to Lake Malawi, to discuss
courtyard spawning cichlids of the genus Tramitichromis. Then it
is over to West Africa with Paul Loiselle for Tilapia snyderae,
a dwarf cichlid from Lake Bermin. I was fortunate enough to receive a gift
of several pairs of these from Rick Borstein this past summer—thanks Rick!—and
I have to say that they are now one of my favorites—bright colors and fantastic
parental care all wrapped up in a small package. You definitely have to
try these. Then, we head due south to the coast of Namibia to learn about
Thoracochromis
buysi from Roger Bills. Fish from the very southern part of Africa
are not common in the hobby but from the looks of them, they should be!
Finally we travel to the furthest reaches of the Amazon, as Heiko Bleher
tells us of his discovery of a new solid blue Heckel discus.
Not only are these fishes from different places, but they also cover
the gamut of reproductive styles in cichlids, including substrate spawners
and mouthbrooders, from lakes to rivers, sandy shores to woody river banks.
Cichlids truly are a diverse group. Now is the time to break out of your
old habits and try something new. You too might just find a new favorite
cichlid.
