EDITOR'S UPDATE
A new year brings new challenges and new opportunities. In this issue we bring you cutting edge developments in the world of cichlids, and in particular, spawning reports of a diversity of species. Kelly Howard and Eric Hanneman describe their attempts (and ultimate success) at breeding Etroplus canarensis, the pearl chromide from southern India. Lee Newman spawns Geophagus taeniopareius from Venezuela. Patrick Tawil describes the first ever reproduction of Trematochromis benthicola from Lake Tanganyika, and Anton Lamboj breeds Etia nguti from Cameroon. To round out the issue, Ad Konings sorts out the thick-lipped Lake Malawi fish Protomelas ornatus from its close relatives. Some of these fish are beautiful, some are less so, but all are interesting.

You may be thinking “those people have access to fish I can never get. I could never get something truly new and different”. You would be wrong. Certainly you are not going to find many surprises at your local pet superstore—that is not their business—but interesting fish are available if you take the time and trouble to seek them out. There are lots of cichlids out there for which we know next to nothing and dedicated effort in someone’s tank—perhaps your tank—may reveal new things. Grab the spirit of the new year to challenge yourself to try working with something that you never tried before.

Be sure to take time to really watch your fish; they have so many stories to tell!
