With this issue, Cichlid News enters its twentieth (20th !) year of publication. In October 1990, Cichlid News began as a one page photographic newsletter available only to commercial distributors of cichlids. It was expanded to the multi-page color publication you are now reading in August 1991 and was made available to hobbyists as well. Thus was born Cichlid News which has been published quarterly since 1992. This January 2012 issue marks the 80th issue overall! Congratulations to publisher Laif DeMason whose creative vision is responsible for this internationally respected cichlid publication. May it and we continue to share up-to-date information to the cichlid hobby for many more years to come! This month’s issue is ‘decidedly Tanganyikan’ in theme. For more than 25 years, since its initial introduction to the aquarium hobby in 1958, almost all Tropheus variants and species that were introduced into the hobby were termed Tropheus moorii by aquarists and scientists alike, until it became obvious that more than a single species was involved. Recent ichthyological sleuthing by Ad Konings has led him to identify the correct collection site of the holotype of T. moorii and with it the correct identity of living specimens. He presents the results of this investigation and reviews the taxonomic problems this species assignment may cause. We are also treated to Ad’s account of his recent 2011 expedition to Burundi and Northern Congo, in Part 2 of his article of the same name. (Part 1 is to be found in the October 2011 issue). In a decidedly change of pace for Cichlid News (the first non-cichlid article ever!), noted aquarist Eric Bodrock shares his experiences raising and breeding the Tanganyika Lampeye, Lamprichthys tanganicanus. As Eric states firmly, these killifish are more than cichlid chow! Much more! Beautiful and interesting enough for even hardened cichlidophiles like myself to consider keeping! After this Tanganyika theme, internationally known Central American cichlid expert and creator of the preeminent cichlid website The Cichlid Room Companion (www.cichlidae.com) Mexican aquarist Juan Miguel Artigas Azas shares his observations and lush underwater photos of the Texas cichlid Herichthys cyanoguttaus. Rounding out this month’s issue is a ‘My Favorite 6 Cichlids’ entry by noted aquarist Ted Judy who frames the game in a new way by listing his six favorite genera! I know what you mean, Ted! Finally, Laif DeMason treats us yet again to his perennial ‘What’s New’. After nineteen years of his column, that’s quite a few new cichlids that have been introduced to the hobby via Cichlid News! By the way, Laif promises more special treats to come from Cichlid News for the next issues in our anniversary year, (stay tuned!) From all of us here at Cichlid News, as we enter our twentieth year of publication with this issue, Happy Holidays and enjoy your cichlids! |
